Peace on Earth Goodwill Be Damned

James Fox

I do not advocate war or the killing of any human, but instead I advocate, like Teddy Roosevelt, walking softly, but carrying a big stick. I believe that the threat of a huge, irresistible force is the only way to force rogue nations to behave.

The greater portion of written history has been about wars from the Punic Wars 165 years before Christ, to the Crusades, a two hundred year religious war. A thousand years after Christ, right up to a short two hundred years ago when we started doing our bit to get mentioned in the history books.

In the short, three hundred year period that the white European male has occupied this continent, he managed to get involved in twelve wars plus many skirmishes including killing of the native Indian for a recorded 136 years. It seems to prove two things: one, that we apparently don't learn much from history; and two, that we are obsessed with interfering with the internal affairs of other nations. This behavior, although reprehensible probably was necessary for the ultimate objective of bringing a lasting peace to earth; therefore our behavior, by definition, can be defined as altruistic.

The League of Nations, The United Nations, and NATO were and are all spineless failures and the real cause of problems in Europe. I say this because they were intended to be the police force of the earth, but instead they rely on diplomacy and appeasement to diffuse confrontational situations. Their charters were even worded to reflect the use of diplomacy and concessions to solve problems between nations. Our intent when reluctantly becoming a party to these organizations was to create a huge, multinational military force to crush any overt aggressive acts by any nation against its neighbor.

Any leader, who is foolish enough to order his military to cross his borders and attack his neighbor, is supposed to be immediately crushed by the entire group multilaterally declaring war against the transgressor, swiftly crushing his forces by a staggering display of power and disposing of the criminal leader who broke the rules. Unfortunately, most of the members never have the guts to insist on confrontation instead of negotiation.

The United States is trying to unify this diverse group into a single coalition with a single purpose, and that is to present a unified front to any troublemaker. However I think this effort is doomed to failure.

The other obvious method of maintaining law and order in the world is for one single benevolent nation to be able to dominate and dictate to any or all other nations. Obviously we are trying, but we fall far short on capability because of conflicting priorities.
