OUR TWO WARS

James Fox

When Lincoln gave his famous speech in Gettysburg in 1863, he said we were engaged in a great Civil War testing whether our nation or any nation conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, could long endure. He concluded his speech with the promise that this nation would have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people would not perish from the earth.

Since that time we have been engaged in 10 other wars in an ongoing attempt to keep the peace and liberate our friends and allies from the oppresive yoke of tyranical nations. In these wars we always prevailed because of our military might and our will to win. Viet Nam was an exception because it was our first encounter with an enemy with no uniform. Our military wasn't conditioned to kill old women and 8-year-old children carrying grenades in flower baskets. It was our first encounter with terrorists who didn't value their own lives.

On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran and took approximately seventy Americans captive. This terrorist act triggered the most profound crisis of the Carter presidency and began a personal ordeal for Jimmy Carter and the American people that lasted 444 days. This was, in fact, the beginning of the war unofficially declared by many, islamic, terrorist groups against the infidel nation, the United States of America.

This is the point in time that should have motivated our preparation for two kinds of war. We have the military might to vanquish and depose the government of any nation that supports or harbors terrorists, We proved this in Afganistan and in the Balkins. Unfortunately, because of the apathy or indifference of all the administrations including Carters' we have dropped the ball in preparing for an all out war with terrorists. A war that we can never win with our military or even the combined military of all the UN and NATO.

Carter should have initiated the formation of our covert army. An army composed of literly thousands of ordinary citizens living and working in every country on earth. They should work their way into all foreign governments, militant groups, and every phase of the country's infrastructure.

These sleepers might never be called upon to do anything, but their Swiss accounts would keep getting larger. However, when a situation like 9-11 was being planned, we would be informed, and counter measures initiated. If they were still able to succeed in their mission, and Osama bin Laden publicly took credit for the deed; the Taliban and all known Al Qaeda members could have died of mysterious causes; poison in their water supply, house-fires, actual executions and many other means.

We should never take credit for the happenings and not knowing who or why would instill the terror in their minds in the same manner, they are trying to terrify us. This is the only way we will ever prevail in our second war, The War against terror.
