SOME PEOPLE NEED WARNING LABELS

August 24, 2003

It was tragic that a woman swimming with seals was killed by a shark attack on the California coast. However, the woman should have known that swimming with seals wearing a dark wet suit and swim fins resembles a slow-moving seal, possible in trouble, and attractive to sharks hunting seals. In another foolish situation, a man was electrocuted while trying to fetch a palm branch from a power line with an aluminum pool pole. Then the man's own carelessness resulted in a lawsuit against the power company and the pool pole manufacturer because the aluminum pole didn't have a warning label on it.

What's even more disturbing is that America has become a superficial society of irresponsible extremes. There are so many people who take unreasonable risks, do dangerous things, and who recklessly operate vehicles such as ATV's and off-road motorcycles, simply to thrill or entertain themselves. Consequently, too many people are seriously injured or killed, requiring costly rescues and medical care, at everyone else's expense. Indeed, maybe it's time to protect people from themselves by putting "Dangerous if used improperly" warning labels on their foreheads prior to engaging in stupidity.
